We are very excited to be taking part in this year’s Nottingham Vs Derby Readathon, where we will find out which of the city’s students can read for the most minutes in one week!
Throughout the week starting 30 September, students will be encouraged to keep a log of all of the minutes they spend reading each day (using Track My Read, which they can find on their Student Portal homepage or by visiting trackmyread.org/school/the-bulwell-academy-588614. Students will receive a special Readathon bookmark and sponsor sheet, and will be invited to take part in all kinds of reading activities throughout the week! Scroll down the page to sponsor a child online (no cash needed)!
We are proud to be running a Reading Relay, where our Big Bulwell Book will be travelling from classroom to classroom. Students who receive the Big Bulwell Book will then spend around 20 minutes reading before the Book moves on to another classroom. This way, someone will be reading at The Bulwell Academy for every minute of every school day during the Readathon week!
Most excitingly, the Big Bulwell Book will also be making its way to some of our fantastic local primary schools! Student volunteers from The Bulwell Academy will be reading to primary school students, sharing their love of books and helping to inspire their younger peers. We understand some of our local primaries are also taking part in the Readathon, meaning we’ll all be adding our reading minutes to Nottingham’s total!
We are also taking part in a livestream author event featuring Nottingham’s own Steven Camden, who visited The Bulwell Academy last term for an incredible creative writing workshop. Year 8 and 9 students at the top of the Sparx Reader leaderboard have been invited to this wonderful opportunity to listen to and send questions to a published local author. This event has been organised by our friends at BookSparks part of Priority Literacy
With this Readathon we are raising funds for the charity Read For Good, who bring books and story-tellers into children’s hospitals to bring joy to young people in difficult times. For more information on Read For Good, please see their website: readforgood.org
The Bulwell Academy will also receive book vouchers worth 20% of the total donations to make our school library even more useful and welcoming for our students, and if we raise more than £50, two lucky students will each receive book vouchers of their own. For our last Readathon all the way back in 2014, we raised £176, so we hope to beat that amount this time.
We would like to make clear that the Readathon fundraising is completely optional. If you cannot donate for any reason, that’s okay! Please encourage your child to read anyway, as their reading minutes will still count towards our total and may help us to beat Derby (which is very important for all of the Forest fans out there). Anything counts, whether they’re reading novels or comics or magazines, or even listening to audiobooks.
For the duration of the Readathon, we will donate £2.50 to Read For Good for every purchase of a First Story book through the Arbor School Shop. First Story books are written by our students in partnership with a professional author, Paula Rawsthorne, with their best work throughout the year being professionally edited and published. They are available for £5 through your Arbor Parent Account.
If you have not yet set up your Arbor account, please visit: Arbor Parent Portal and App ⋆ Bulwell Academy
