Why Careers Education Matters at The Bulwell Academy

At The Bulwell Academy, we believe that careers education is a cornerstone of preparing our students for success beyond the classroom. In today’s fast-changing world, young people need more than academic knowledge—they need the confidence, skills, and guidance to navigate a wide range of opportunities. Careers education helps students understand the pathways available to them, whether that’s university, apprenticeships, vocational training, or direct employment. By making these options clear and accessible, we empower every student to make informed choices about their future and see the relevance of their learning in real life.

Our careers programme is designed to raise aspirations and break down barriers. We work closely with local employers, colleges, and universities to provide real-world experiences that inspire ambition and broaden horizons. Through workshops, work experience, and personalised guidance, students develop essential employability skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving—qualities that employers value highly. At Bulwell Academy, careers education is not just about finding a job; it’s about helping young people discover their passions, build resilience, and create a future where they can thrive and contribute positively to their communities.

Our approach is underpinned by the Gatsby Benchmarks, ensuring that careers provision meets national standards and prepares students for life beyond school.

Key Features of our Careers Programme

Gatsby Benchmarks Alignment:

We follow the eight Gatsby Benchmarks, which include embedding careers learning into the curriculum, providing encounters with employers, and offering personal guidance to every student.

Partnerships and Networks:

The Academy works closely with the Careers & Enterprise Company through the East Midlands Careers Hub, local employers, apprenticeship providers, and universities. These partnerships enable students to access meaningful encounters with the world of work and higher education.

Events and Activities:

  • Annual Careers Fair featuring local and national employers, colleges, and training providers.
  • Year-group assemblies and workshops on topics such as CV writing, interview skills, and post-16 options.
  • Trips and workplace visits to give students first-hand experience of different industries.
  • Employer talks and alumni sessions to inspire students with real-life

Students: Your Careers Programme

Here at The Bulwell Academy we believe that your first day at school is the time that you should be really thinking about what you do when you leave. We think that your education is the beginning of your journey to enter the world of work.

All students are entitled to careers education, information, advice and guidance that is impartial and confidential. We believe that students and parents have an entitlement to support with careers.

Each year we have a range of activities that are designed to help you to explore what jobs or industries might be best for you. We invite employers and specialists to come in to school to share their expertise and we organise trips and visits so that you can see the world of work for yourself..

Useful Websites & Resources

As well as making the most of all the opportunities that the Academy offers, it is really important to develop the skills to explore the world of work and future career options online.

We have selected a number of websites and resources that provide detailed information to inform future choices.
