Safeguarding Support in School

“Safeguarding children because every child matters”

All safeguarding concerns should be reported to the Safeguarding Team. Contact details are on the image above.

At THE BULWELL ACADEMY, we place the highest priority on safeguarding children.

Every year group has a Safeguarding assembly delivered weekly to ensure they are knowledgeable on specific areas of safeguarding.

To ensure all students are safe, we need the support of all staff, parents, visitors and our community. If you have any concerns or worries about the safety and welfare of our students, please inform the Safeguarding Team immediately. DO NOT KEEP CONCERNS TO YOURSELF.

The school is part of the Operation Encompass initiative. This provides school with a direct link to the local police force who can inform the school of any incidents of domestic violence in homes which affect our students. This vital link allows us to ensure that students are better protected and can be offered more support.

About the Safeguarding Team

Miss Amy Fuller
Vice Principal – Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

E: safeguarding@bulwellacademy.org.uk

I am proud to lead a knowledgeable and hard-working safeguarding team who want the best outcomes for all Academy students.

The Safeguarding Team will support the children and families of The Bulwell Academy to ensure that barriers to education are removed and parents are signposted to the relevant support agencies. This support and assistance encourages our students to be aspirational, kind, and equipped with the social skills and knowledge to build positive futures.

Mr Matt Orridge
Safeguarding Manager – Deputy DSL

E: safeguarding@bulwellacademy.org.uk

Since 2017, I have had the privilege of working at The Bulwell Academy in a variety of roles, providing me with a comprehensive understanding of all areas of school life.

I have developed a strong commitment to safeguarding and have played an active role in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all students. I have built up close working relationships with staff, student and parents ensuring that appropriate support is in place.

I recognise the importance of creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where students feel heard, valued, and protected. I am deeply committed to fostering a culture of care within the Academy, where safeguarding is always a priority, ensuring that every student feels secure in their school environment.

Mrs Manasi Dhavle
Safeguarding Officer

E: safeguarding@bulwellacademy.org.uk

To build a better future, we must first protect the children who will shape it. I am committed to not just keeping children safe but creating an environment where they can truly thrive.

A Masters degree in Psychology equips me with the expertise to understand children’s complex needs. It allows me to create strategies that promote their safety and growth. This means working closely with students, families, and external agencies to remove barriers that hinder a child’s ability to attend, engage, and thrive in school.

My approach is both compassionate and result-oriented—ensuring students feel supported and understood, while empowering them to overcome challenges and reach their full potential.

Kylie Walls (maternity cover)
Safeguarding Officer

E: safeguarding@bulwellacademy.org.uk

Growing up in the local community of Bulwell,  I’m proud to come back to Bulwell to serve, and work collaboratively with the young people and families who attend the academy.

With over 12 years of experience in the children’s social care sector, I bring a strong foundation in supporting children and families to my role as Safeguarding Officer. I have previously worked in a secondary school in a similar capacity, where I developed a broad skill set that includes therapeutic training, trauma informed training, as Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA), and supporting students’ emotional wellbeing.

In addition to safeguarding responsibilities, I have extensive experience in pastoral care, behaviour support, and attendance management. I am passionate about creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where every student can thrive both academically and emotionally. My approach is always child-centred, working closely with families, staff, and external agencies to ensure the best outcomes for our students.

Prior to joining the Academy, I worked with young adults for over 17 years as a Probation Officer. During my career, I have witnessed how early support in the lives of young people and families can make a significant difference to their futures.

I am passionate about providing proactive support to our young people and families, helping them remove barriers to education, overcome challenges and achieve better outcomes.

External Safeguarding Support

Khalid Mahmood
School Counsellor

 Website: al-hurraya.org

As the School Counsellor at The Bulwell Academy, I’m dedicated to providing a safe, supportive space where students can be heard, valued, and understood.

With over 15 years of experience in counselling across schools, colleges, and charitable organisations, I’m passionate about guiding young people through both the exciting milestones and the challenging moments of their academic journey.

My goal is to help students navigate life's ups and downs—whether it's managing stress, overcoming friendship struggles, dealing with academic pressures, or fostering personal growth. I offer practical coping strategies, encouragement, and a listening ear whenever it’s needed most.

Outside of school, I enjoy cooking, staying active, travelling, and practising meditation. Above all, I cherish spending quality time with family and friends. I firmly believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to feel confident, supported, and empowered on their journey.

PC Susan Kang
Schools & Early Intervention Officer
Nottinghamshire Police

I have been a Police Officer for over 20 years and have had many roles within the Police Force during this time. I’ve been working with young people in schools since 2023.

As a Schools and Early Intervention Officer (SEIO), my role is vital in engaging with young people focusing on creating positive relationships. It’s important to build trust and confidence and guide young people towards making positive choices and deterring them from a life of crime.

My role is focused on crime prevention while delivering interventions and education support to prevent offending. I support young people in making positive choices while maintaining a point of contact between the police, schools, and community partners.

SEIOs are an integral part of schools’ safeguarding teams:

  • Engaging with young people in schools to educate and raise awareness about crime prevention and safety.
  • Delivering presentations on crime and crime prevention, focusing on topics such as anti-social behaviour (ASB), criminal damage, knife crime, joint enterprise, hate crime, and road safety
  • Diverting young people from the criminal justice system by explaining the consequences of their actions and promoting legal and safe behaviour
  • Building trust and confidence in the police among young people by providing guidance and support
  • Facilitating the sharing of information between officers in charge (OIC) and schools to improve safeguarding
  • Working with internal and external partners to ensure positive outcomes for young people
  • Acting as a Cadet Leader and supporting volunteer Police Cadets on a rota basis

I have been working in the drug and alcohol field supporting young people for 16 years as a resilience worker, and have since taken on the role of Early Intervention Coordinator with CGL The Place, a national drug and alcohol support service primarily for young people up to the age of 25 as well as offering support to families impacted.

Throughout my work I have had a huge passion working with schools ensuring that we offer the best support focusing on early intervention and building on change in how we deliver support to young people; working in collaboration to inform, shape and influence our way of working in order to offer the best outcomes.

I am a qualified mental health nurse and have experience working in CAMHS and forensic mental health. I am also a huge Swiftie! I offer a weekly drop-in on a Wednesday lunchtime in the school counsellor’s office. Students can come and talk to me about all things related to their health, such as sleep, eating, mental health, toileting, sexual health, and behaviour. Drop-in is a judgement-free space and I will always try my best to offer support.
