World Book Day Review 2025

World Book Day celebrations took place all day at The Bulwell Academy on Thursday 6 March. Staff across the school went above and beyond with their book-related fancy dress.

Year 7 students had an early World Book Day visit from John-Gordon Reid from What on Earth books on Thursday 5 March. He took them on a journey through nature and science from the formation of the Earth to fossils to nuclear fuel! The interactive talks built up to a whole year group quiz, with the best of the best winning books and magazines to continue their journey into the world of facts and fascinating information.

On 6 March, Year 8 students attended an assembly where they were able to meet the writer of the book they read during tutor time, Boy Everywhere! They gained an insight into the inspiration behind the book from A M Dassu herself, who answered student questions about the book and about being an author.

Selected Year 8 students also attended a workshop where they had the opportunity to hear from the real Syrian refugees who inspired A M Dassu’s book, and to discuss and consider how they might cope with having to flee their home due to war.

Our visiting author also held a workshop for our Reading Leaders about her book ‘Fight Back’. This was a great opportunity for them to explore their love for reading and writing further, and learn how to be an effective Ally and take an active role in their community..

The World Book Day theme continued throughout the day with book-related lessons and book-related competitions and activities at lunchtime. Several students wrote 100 word stories for the Young Writers’ competition Grim Tales, while others crafted stories in only 6 words! We’ll be announcing our chosen winner shortly, and sharing the top three tiny stories.

To end the day, we held our second annual World Book Day family quiz in the school library. Thanks to all of the teams who attended and gave it their best, and congratulations to our winning teams who showed off their literary know-how and won book bundles and bookmarks!

Many thanks to the Reading Team for organising such a great day!
