Friday 20 May 2022

The Academy is a very busy place at the moment with GCSE exams taking place, and students really focused on doing their absolute best. Other students have been involved in some great events which are detailed in the Bulwell Bulletin below, and generally there is a real buzz of purpose around the place – which is lovely to see.

The new main gate arrangement at the start and end of the day has made a significant improvement to student safety and some members of the community have been very complimentary about the improvement in our student’s behaviour especially on Squires Avenue – so again very positive. We will continue to encourage our students to behave well in and around the school and on their way to school and home. Thank you for any support you have given us in delivering those messages.

Please enjoy reading below about the great things going on at the school currently, and please also read the last 3 bullet points at the end about a few changes we have made to make further improvements to the school and to the expectations of student behaviour.

Have a great week.

DofE Relaunch

Our Duke of Edinburgh programme is re-emerging from the pandemic and, I’m pleased to say, Year 11 students will be doing their Bronze Award expedition (after GCSE exams) on 29-30 June.

New DofE Year 9 recruits kicked off their training last week with The Army ‘Desert Rats’. Major Downing led sessions on Team Building and First Aid to develop their skills before their Bronze expedition on 13-14 July.

Students will learn campcraft, basic map reading skills, route planning and the Countryside code in the coming weeks.

Both expeditions will be a planned scenic walk to Robin Hood Activity Centre in Ravenshead. We look forward to sharing more photos with you later in the summer term.

That students will have such fantastic experiences is thanks to DofE Leaders, Mr Turner and Mr Watson, who have been working hard in the background to keep the award afloat during the pandemic.

Fantastic Friday Superstars

Congratulations to our Fantastic Friday Superstars in each year group who all received a £10 Amazon voucher.

Sixth Form Lead, Mr Turner (pictured with Year 12 winners) said: “Not only have these students had excellent attendance and punctuality, but they are always willing to help out without any fuss. They have been exemplary in displaying the Academy’s values: Respect – Resilience – Creativity – Ambition – Kindness.”

Our next Fantastic Friday takes place on Friday 27 May.

Instrumental Days

Last week was the final of the Trust-wide Instrumental Days for the school year where players from across the Creative Education Trust schools came together to form an orchestra.

Players performed as an orchestra and also as sectionals.

Bulwell students had a great time making music and also learning from others. Any students interested in taking up an instrument should see Mr Longbottom.

Soaring High

Congratulations to Alex Kearns in Year 11 who has recently completed a skydive in aid of NIDAS, which supports women and families with all aspects of domestic abuse.

If your child would like to join any of the activities, they should see the activity lead for a parental consent form.

The programme includes our popular Breakfast Club which offers a free breakfast to all students up to the value of 60p along with a variety of games and activities. Breakfast Club begins at 7.45am and finishes in time for the morning line-up. Students are collected from the gate at 7.45am or can enter from 8am when the main gate opens. During the exam season, Breakfast Club will take place in the Library until 8.15am.

Year 11 Exams and Period 6 Support

A reminder for Year 11 parents/carers and students that the Year 11 Exams Timetable and weekly Period 6 schedule can be accessed from the home page of the Academy website: Exam Information ⋆ Bulwell Academy

After-school revision and support sessions will continue for Year 11 right up until the end of exams. Please encourage your child to attend to give themselves the best chance of success.

Changes from 16 May

  • The Bulwell Academy is now a ‘water only’ school – please send students to school with water only in a clear plastic bottle
  • A reminder that no jewellery is permitted to be worn by students apart from a watch (not a Smart watch)
  • Due to an increase in students using mobile phones on site, we will be asking parents/carers to collect confiscated phones at the end of the school day (after 2.50pm). Students will not be able to collect them – only the parent/carer. Please encourage your child to switch off their phone at the main school gate, place it in their bags and not switch it back on until they arrive at the main school gate at the end of the day, in line with current rules to avoid it being confiscated. This should avoid any problems associated with confiscation.

A reminder of the uniform policy can be found here: Uniform ⋆ Bulwell Academy
